Spanish Language Studies Programs are designed and intended for all levels of Spanish learning, from real beginners to advanced level of the Spanish language. Our Spanish language program encourages students to develop the four language acquisition skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
In additon, Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoy (EPSA) classroom description states as follows:
Spanish faculty from the Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoy (EPSA) will teach your Spanish courses.
3 to 4 hours/day of Spanish Language Courses from Mondays to Thursdays.
Class schedules: mornings to afternoons.
Class size varies between 1 and 15 SAOA students for both language courses. Thanks to these smaller class sizes you will receive more individual attention from your teachers.
Periodic exams, homework assignments and final exams will be held at the end of each module.
Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor and SAOA Staff.
Teaching styles in Spain can be very different from those found in the US. Expect different classroom structures and coursework for your school.
SAOA classes are held at the Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoy (EPSA), which is a centenary institution, inherited from the Elementary Industrial School created in 1853.
The EPSA is part of the Polytechnics University of Valencia since 1972. Several buildings comprise Alcoy Campus: the building placed at the “paseo Viaducto” (1926) and, one kilometre away from it, the two old factories “Ferrándiz & Carbonell”. These are two restored textile companies from the beginning of the 20th century that hold the EPSA.
Nowadays, this campus enrols near 2.500 students in any of its 11 different engineering degrees with a community of around 100 international students.
All SAOA students will benefit form the following Campus facilities among many others:

The Spanish grading system is based on a scale of 10, as opposed to 100 in the US system. It would be inaccurate to merely multiply a Spanish grade by 10 to find its US equivalent. Also, please keep in mind that grading varies from subject to subject. For example, in mathematics a student may receive a 10 for completing all the problems correctly, whereas in the humanities, a 7 on an essay is a very acceptable grade. Grading in Spain can be severe and grades of 9 and 10 are quite rare. In addition to listing a numeric grade for each course, transcripts from Spanish universities list a verbal grade. The University of Alicante has released the following chart to assist US Universities in interpreting the Spanish grading scale. Per the University of Alicante, interpretation of the Spanish grading scale is as follows:
| Spanish Verbal Grade | US Verbal Equivalent | Spanish Number Grade | US Letter Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matrícula de honor | With honors | 10 | A+ |
| Sobresaliente | Excellent | 9.5 | A |
| Sobresaliente | Excellent- | 9 | A- |
| Notable Alto | Very Good+ | 8.5 | B+ |
| Notable | Very Good | 7.5 - 8 | B |
| Notable Bajo | Very Good- | 7 | B- |
| Bien Alto | Good+ | 6.5 | C+ |
| Bien | Good | 6 | C |
| Bien Bajo | Good- | 5.5 | C |
| Aprobado | Adequate/Pass | 5 | D |
| Suspenso | Fail | 4.9 | F |
| No presentado | Incomplete | N/A |
Please note that this grading scale is recommended by SAOA and Higher Polytechnic School of Alcoy (EPSA),, but final credit and grade evaluation is ultimately determined by a student's home university.
